As the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) prepares to move forward with amending emerald ash borer [ [link removed] ] (EAB) rules, we seek input on what approach the public supports. The two options the DACF is currently considering are:


* "*Option 1: Draft new quarantine rules based on current knowledge of EAB distribution and buffer area.?*"
* "*Option 2: Repeal the EAB quarantine rules.*"

Both options will require rulemaking, providing an opportunity for formal public comment. We would also welcome input on other possibilities we have yet to consider.?

Forestry Friday: Tick Talk with Chuck Lubelczyk

This is a timely talk during?Maine's Lyme Disease Awareness Month [ [link removed] ]?about ticks: ecology, diseases, prevention measures. Chuck Lubelczyk is a MaineHealth Institute for Research Vector-Borne Disease Laboratory field scientist. He has been working on tick research since the late 1990s, focusing on the interactions between ticks and mosquitoes and their host and habitat requirements. As a Vector-borne Disease Work Group member, he is the attendee most-likely-to-participate-while-conducting fieldwork. He knows ticks from a scientific, practical and personal standpoint. Join us for an engaging and informative talk from one of Maine's top tick experts for our Lyme Disease Awareness Month-Forestry Friday.

Forestry for Maine Birds: Zoom Training & Field Workshop

The?WoodWise East Program [ [link removed] ]?is hosting a special training for foresters working in the DownEast area on how to manage forests ?with birds and other wildlife in mind.? *Description*

*On Wednesday, May 17,* we will hear from Sally Stockwell, Director of Conservation with Maine Audubon, via Zoom for an introduction to Forestry for Maine Birds (FFMB).

*On Thursday, May 25,* the Zoom training will be followed by a field-based workshop with a short introductory indoor meeting at the Caribou Bog Outdoor Center, on Taylor Road in Orono followed by a field trip in the Newman Hill Property of the Orono Land Trust. We will learn how to and practice doing habitat assessments, learn about the history of management at Newman Hill, explore current management using the Focus Species Forestry (FSF) approach, and discuss ways to incorporate both FFMB and FSF into your management plans.

There is no fee for the workshop, but please *register for the field-based workshop [ [link removed] ]* so we know how many people will be coming, and how many lunches to order. Continuing education credits will be available.

The field training will be led by Sally Stockwell, Director of Conservation, Maine Audubon; Rob Bryan, forester and author of Focus Species Forestry; and Joe Roy, Private Lands Biologist, MDIFW.

BMPs to Protect Water Quality on Haul Roads and Skid Trails Workshop ? Waltham

*Time:*?8:00 AM - 2:00 PM

*Location:*?Elliot Jordan and Son, 382 Cave Hill Rd., Waltham?

This workshop is designed for?*loggers*?and?*foresters*?and includes indoor presentations and an outdoor session. The workshop will focus on the Fundamental BMPs with an emphasis on controlling the flow of water and minimizing/stabilizing exposed mineral soil. The content was developed by the Maine Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Maine Forest Service.

This workshop is approved for the following continuing education credits:

*SAF*?- 4 category 1 credits
*CLP*?- 1 day recertification
*Master Logger*?- 5 credit hours

Lunch will be provided courtesy of The Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Subscribe now to be sure to receive their first bulletin of 2023. *"Browntail Moth Updates"* [ [link removed] ] provide a regular look at browntail moth populations in the state. This year, monitoring sites are found in the following communities: Bangor, Belfast, Brunswick, Dresden, Ellsworth, Garland, Lincoln, Skowhegan, Turner and Unity. *"Emerald Ash Borer Updates"* [ [link removed] ] provide EAB-specific content for those who want to be sure they don?t miss updates on this pest.
