Operation Avro: Council officers seize illegal goods in Bury
Trading standards and licensing officers seized illicit goods worth £30,000 last Thursday as part of Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Operation Avro, a multi-agency initiative to tackle crime across the region. The day of action, which included enforcement and engagement with residents, involved a partnership between GMP, the public sector and communities across the borough.
Council officers visited seven premises with a sniffer dog, GMP and six immigration officers. As part of the raids, they seized 788 vapes and 19.3kg hand-rolling tobacco, which equates to 1,164 packets. They also seize 23,280 cigarettes, the equivalent of 1,164 packets. The approximate street value of the seized goods equates to £30,334 which is now off the streets of Bury.

Australia to ‘ban recreational vaping’
Recreational vaping will be banned in Australia, as part of a major crackdown amid what experts say is an "epidemic". Minimum quality standards will also be introduced, and the sale of vapes restricted to pharmacies. Nicotine vapes already require a prescription in Australia, but the industry is poorly regulated and a black market is thriving.
The reforms include a ban on all disposable vapes and a crackdown on the import of non-prescription products. Scripts will be necessary for the vaping products that remain legal, and they will be required to have pharmaceutical-like packaging. Restrictions on flavours, colours, nicotine concentrations and other ingredients will also be introduced.
However, Health Minister Mark Butler said the government will also make it easier for people to get a prescription for "legitimate therapeutic use".
A timeline for implementation will be announced at a later date.

Australia: Albanese government to raise tobacco tax by 5% a year to make smoking ‘more unattractive’
The Albanese government will increase the tax on tobacco by 5% per year over the next three years, the health minister has revealed. But he said Australia has no plans to follow the path of New Zealand by outlawing tobacco smoking for the next generation.
The tax increase on tobacco will commence from September 1.
“We know that a higher price cigarette is a more unattractive cigarette,” health minister Mark Butler said on Tuesday.
“We will also align the tax treatment of tobacco products so that products like roll- your-own tobacco and manufactured sticks are taxed equally.”
Speaking at the National Press Club, Butler said the tax changes will raise an additional $3.3bn over the coming four years.
