Grassley Statement on the First in the Nation Iowa Caucuses
I hosted my weekly press conference call with Iowa radio stations this morning and was asked about our status as the first-in-the-nation caucus.
I responded, "I think what’s different about the Iowa caucuses is it empowers everyday Americans, as opposed to the way so many elections are conducted in this country through the force of being able to raise money, particularly from powerful interest groups that are always ready to help and the billionaires that can spend their own money. So I think that you raise the question about both the Republicans and the Democrats at the national level complaining about it, you can say this is a Democrat problem in Iowa, but you can also say that Republicans in Iowa and Democrats in Iowa are arm-in-arm defending our first in the nation position and I would say as long as New Hampshire and Iowa stick together in a bipartisan, bi-state way, that 2024 we'll be having the first-in-the-nation caucuses and I am going to defend that position."
You can also view my joint statement with Senator Joni Ernst and Governor Kim Reynolds defending Iowa's role in the presidential nominating process here.
I also defended our status and the legitimacy of the Iowa caucuses to my Senate colleagues today. Every week, Republican senators gather together for lunch to discuss important issues. With all the focus on the Iowa caucuses, here are a few reports out of today’s lunch.
