📋 Abortion Rights Canvass 📋

Abortion is healthcare and a human right! We are campaigning to pressure the City of Atlanta to renew funding for abortion care and enshrine support for abortion access in this year's City Budget. Our city council members have a responsibility to stand up for working people and fight back against anti-democratic assaults on our reproductive rights. Atlanta must put people before profits and fund healthcare not cops!

We'll be reaching out to people about our Abortion Fund petition and also sharing abortion resources and information. Wear a mask and bring a friend. Make sure to download the free MiniVAN canvassing app ahead of time (App Store / Google Play). Water and snacks will be provided! No experience needed. This event will happen rain or shine, so please bring an umbrella and raincoat in case of rain.

But to do this, we need your help! Fill out our 2023 Labor Survey to tell us about yourself, your workplace, and the ways you'd like to help get involved in our work. Fill out the survey to enter the raffle and win a prize at the May General Meeting!

🌹 May Day & The Haymarket Affair 🌹

This article was reprinted from the Spring 2016 edition of Equality, an earlier version of ATLDSA's newsletter, and written by Milt Tambor.

May Day, as a day to honor the international workers’ movement, was born out of the Chicago Haymarket tragedy and American labor’s struggle for an eight-hour day in the 1880s. At the time, it was quite common to work 10-to 16-hour days in unsafe conditions. Samuel Gompers, president of the newly formed American Federation of Labor, called the demand for an eight-hour day nothing less than a “second declaration of independence.” On May 1, 1886, 250,000 workers joined in a nation-wide strike demanding a shorter work day. Chicago, with its strong labor movement, had the largest demonstration as 80,000 workers marched up Michigan Avenue carrying union banners. On May 4, in response to the killing of picketing workers by Chicago police at the McCormick Reaper Plant, a protest meeting was held at Haymarket Square.
