Anti-LGBTQ extremists have introduced hundreds of discriminatory bills at the state level this year alone. From restrictions on gender-affirming care to the use of personal pronouns, the insidious effort to persecute trans Americans – especially children – is gaining traction by the day.

The GOP House majority recently pushed through a bill that we’ve dubbed the “Politics Over Participation Act,” which is nothing more than a thinly veiled effort to legislate hate against our vulnerable trans children.

Not only is this bill the first standalone anti-trans legislation to receive a vote on the House floor, but it also fails to put children first, and directly threatens the safety of young women and girls. Under the Politics Over Participation Act, young women and girls in sports could be forced to answer personal and invasive health questions, and subjected to inspection by adults they don’t even know.

I was a student athlete during my time at UC Santa Barbara, and even went on to play for the USA Volleyball Team. Keeping up with a sport on top of school, work, and a personal life is hard enough – let alone the struggles and discrimination that trans students face every day. Student athletes shouldn’t have to also worry about being forced to disclose deeply personal information or being subjected to extreme invasions of privacy, just to participate like everyone else.
I wasn’t kidding about playing for the USA Volleyball Team! Here’s a clip of me in one of our games shortly after I graduated college.

Enacting this legislation will prevent parents and medical professionals from doing what’s best for their children. Congress should be focused on upholding the privacy and boundaries that keep female athletes safe, and allowing the policing of the bodies of adolescent girls is not the way to do that.

Sports should be safe, fair, and accessible – for everyone. This bill is dangerous and discriminatory. Period.

Anti-LGBTQ Republicans have shown that they would rather use fear mongering to attack trans and intersex kids, instead of actually working to address the real challenges and gender equity issues that impact students nationwide.

We should be focusing on gun violence prevention, mental health, sexual harassment and assault, and lack of equal resources and pay equality in women’s and girls’ sports.

As the Politics Over Participation Act heads to the Senate for a vote, we must call out this bill as the hateful attack that it is. Add your name to join me in saying that we won’t stand for discrimination against trans students. [[link removed]]STAND WITH TRANS STUDENTS [[link removed]]

Thanks for taking action.
