No parent should have to fear for their children’s safety because of gun violence.
Friend,
Last month was a harrowing reminder of the constant cost of the GOP’s failure to pass comprehensive gun safety measures.
So far in 2023, mass shootings have been occurring at a record pace, and just last month there were three prominent examples of unnecessary incidents of gun violence:
In Texas, two teen cheerleaders were shot in a grocery store parking lot for mistakenly entering the wrong car.
In New York, a 20-year-old woman was shot and killed for turning into the wrong driveway.
And in Kansas City, a 16-year-old Black student, Ralph Yarl, was shot for accidentally ringing the doorbell of the wrong house by an 84-year-old white man.
None of these young Americans should have been the targets of gun violence. And Ralph should not be in the hospital recovering while the man who callously shot him walked free for days. That Ralph has been released from the hospital and will survive is nothing short of a miracle.
Let's get one thing straight, Friend — making a mistake like ringing the wrong doorbell is not a crime, and it does not warrant being shot. What happened to Ralph is a reminder that while gun violence affects us all, it is also a racial justice issue. And as GOP politicians continue to offer only “thoughts and prayers” every time there’s another tragedy, they’re ignoring the real, institutional changes their constituents are demanding to save lives.
No parent should have to receive a phone call that their child is in the hospital because of a gunshot wound or has been killed because of it. We refuse to accept this as the status quo, and will continue to fight for an end to gun violence. Dem AGs are committed to racial justice and keeping our communities safe.
Thank you,
