Friend, our research shows that supportive adults can make a difference for LGBTQ young people. To begin Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing with you the results of our 2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People ([link removed]) .

In the past year, 41% of LGBTQ young people have seriously contemplated attempting suicide — and those rates are even higher for transgender, nonbinary, and LGBTQ young people of color. Together, we can support LGBTQ young people by affirming their identities, fostering conversations to end the stigma surrounding mental health, and working to reduce the rate of attempted suicide.

The responses of 28,000 LGBTQ young people ages 13 to 24 across the U.S. make it clear that supportive adults can make a difference.
* LGBTQ young people who had access to affirming homes, schools, community events, and online spaces reported lower rates of attempting suicide.
* Transgender and nonbinary people who live with others that respect their pronouns reported lower rates of attempting suicide.

The road forward for LGBTQ young people is paved by supportive allies and the widespread and diverse LGBTQ community. We are committed to continuing to move the needle, and we must do more to end suicide among LGBTQ young people. We all play a role in ending the stigma surrounding mental health, and we must work to create a world that empowers all young people and uplifts their identities.
