Earth Month has come to a close, John.
And in honor of everything our movement accomplished this month, the team here at 350.org put together an "Earth Month 2023: Wrapped" so you can see all that we did together.
Earth Month Challenge
Time and time again, we’ve seen that the power of our climate movement isn’t derived from special interests – it comes from the number of people who stand with us in this fight.
We know that when many of us come together and act as one, we have the power to hold country leaders accountable and make them invest in real, just climate solutions.
So to kick off Earth Month, we gave you a challenge: help grow our climate movement by inviting three people to join us and take action.
Earth Month Spotlights
This year, our focus for Earth Month was on advancing climate justice and real solutions to the climate crisis. To do that, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the powerful work our local groups are doing worldwide.
First, we took a look at South Africa. There our partner organization, Climate Justice Coalition, has been leading many actions to ensure that justice and renewable energy are at the top of the government’s agenda.
Next, we told you about the work of our Canada team. They’ve held Prime Minister Trudeau accountable to his promise of a just transition – which led to the government’s Sustainable Jobs Plan!
From there, we took a look at the powerful work being done by our 350 Ghana Reduce our Carbon team – including stopping the plans for a coal-driven power plant. Their ‘Renewable Energy for Communities’ campaign is growing quickly and leading the movement for clean energy in Ghana.
And finally, we learned about the efforts of our local team in Turkey. They have been fighting for a just transition from coal to renewable energy for years, and are publishing compelling reports on sustainable climate solutions that would refocus their local economy.
Earth Month Quiz
Our central theme for this month was investing in climate solutions. We’ve seen that the more our climate movement talks about solutions – clean, renewable alternatives to fossil fuels, firmly rooted within climate justice – the more the fossil fuel industry tries to co-opt the message.
So we came up with a fun quiz to educate our supporters as to what these false solutions look like, so that we can stay aware of the fossil fuel industry’s tactics and won't let them derail the conversation.
