Yet, today, too many immigrant workers remain in limbo by temporary policies, like the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which continues to be under threat from MAGA judges and far-right politicians, and Washington’s failure to provide a pathway to citizenship. But President Biden and the state of New York are in a unique position to succeed where Congress has failed. President Biden can use his executive power to grant Temporary Protected Status and humanitarian parole to thousands of immigrants who lack legal status.
While NYS can lead the nation by passing the New York for All Act, barring local law enforcement from conspiring with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) to carry out its cruel agenda of ripping immigrant New Yorkers away from their families, jobs, and communities. Coupling executive protection and security with the New York for All Act is not a replacement for the permanent protections our immigrant workers need, but it is an important first step in ensuring the well-being of New York’s workers and businesses until Congress takes action.
