Dear John,
My family is feeling the care worker shortage right now. A few weeks ago, I dropped everything and flew down to Florida when my 90 year-old grandpa had to be hospitalized. I was the one who could get there fastest, and my aunt, uncles and cousins followed, because my grandparents needed support that the system can’t provide.
I understand why this crisis is happening. Direct care workers — disproportionately Black women and women of color — are leaving the field after being paid poverty wages with no benefits. And it’s leaving us all with fewer options when it comes to finding care. Care work is the work that makes all other work possible – we need our leaders to step up and invest in it.
In honor of International Workers’ Day, sign the petition to call on our elected leaders to raise wages and offer real benefits for care workers. [[link removed]]

There are currently an estimated 1.8 million unfilled caregiving jobs. A care worker shortage, caused by low wages and poor benefits, harms everyone – especially family caregivers, disabled people, and aging adults. These essential workers provide lifesaving care that allows our families and communities to thrive. But as it is, we’ve all been held back because we haven’t made permanent, public investments in care.
Investing in care policies is key to supporting families, and we can support those investments by taxing the wealthy. The more of us who rise up in support of care, the more our elected leaders take notice.
When policymakers say we can’t afford to invest in care policies, what they mean is they’ve decided that care isn’t worth investing in. We all need to rise up and make it clear: We can’t afford NOT to invest in care. Sign onto our petition if you agree. [[link removed]]

Each day, we advocate for investments in a care economy that would better support us all, because care can’t wait. We just celebrated the first ever Care Worker Recognition Month in April, but the movement to support care workers doesn’t end here. The success of this movement depends on all of us – and we couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you for everything you do for care.
With care,
