Tonight, the occupant of the White House will be delivering the annual State of the Union Address at the Capitol in Washington, DC.
In stark contrast to the hatred and bigotry emanating from the dais, I am proud to welcome, as my guest, Nneka Hall, a woman who is engaged daily in the work of pursuing equity and uplifting community.
Nneka is an award-winner, an activist, a doula, and a deeply empathetic advocate for our community.
Following the stillbirth of her own daughter, Nneka founded the Quietly United in Loss Together (QUILT) Campaign, which is a Pregnancy And Infant Loss Awareness campaign designed to raise awareness of all types of loss from conception through a child's first two years of life, teach healthy fertility through womb health education, and provide support to families who suffer these losses.
I am humbled to call Nneka a partner in good as we fight to address the maternal health crisis that disproportionately impacts families of color. Despite spending more money on healthcare than any other country on earth, the United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the developed world — and Black women are nearly four times as likely to die from childbirth complications as white women.
That’s why I introduced the Healthy MOMMIES Act, to expand and enhance care options for pregnant people enrolled in Medicaid, including access to community-based doula care, and I’m so proud to have carried many of these policies forward in partnership with my colleagues through the Helping MOMS Act.
Nneka’s work — and that of all the tireless advocates dedicated to ending the maternal mortality crisis — stands in stark contrast to the occupant of the White House — who seeks only to divide and harm our communities by tearing families apart and gutting life-saving programs like Medicaid.
