John—
Throughout the state legislative cycle, we publish Gun Law Trendwatch to break down trends in state gun legislation for legislators and activists across the country. Our latest edition focuses on the incredible gun safety achievements in Michigan.
Following years of high-profile school shootings, extremist threats against elected officials, and rising gun violence, Michigan ushered in new lawmakers committed to taking action. They have demonstrated that lifesaving progress can be quick and simple—all we need are leaders with the courage to act.
This session, Michigan passed universal background checks, joining 20 other states that have already taken this huge step towards reducing gun violence. An extreme risk protection order bill is on the governor’s desk, and a bill prohibiting guns at polling places is making its way through committees. Our policy experts have been hard at work to make sure that these bills and more cross the finish line.
But not every state is making such positive strides. North Carolina recently repealed its universal background checks law. South Carolina’s legislature—held hostage by gun zealots—is pushing dangerous permitless carry legislation, despite public opposition and clear risks to public safety. Gun lobby bills are also progressing in many states, with bills to allow or expand guns in schools pending in at least 15 states, despite recent school shootings.
Our team tracks and analyzes every gun bill in every state, positive or negative, and rounds up the most urgent legislation in Gun Law Trendwatch. Alongside our other publications, like our Annual Gun Law Scorecard, this essential research and analysis helps inform the decisions of lawmakers, advocates, and researchers across the country.
Thank you for supporting Giffords Law Center and our work. It will take all of us to end America’s gun violence epidemic.
With gratitude,
Allison
