Team, we are only four months into 2023 and already we have a clear picture of what's to come should extremist Republicans remain in power. Here’s a rundown of how they have wasted time and resources trying to implement an extremist, anti-immigrant agenda over the past 16 weeks:
- January: The House GOP started off the year plotting the introduction of a xenophobic immigration bill (spoiler alert: it failed) and hosting a sham “border security” hearing that focused more on conspiracy theories than discussing real policies or solutions.
- February: Texas state legislators brought forth a racist and unconstitutional bill that attempted to ban people from Iran, China, Russia, and North Korea from purchasing homes in the state. They also filed a bill that sought to stop undocumented students, as young as five years old, from enrolling in public schools.
- March: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed forcing hospitals to collect data on patients’ immigration status; prohibiting local governments from issuing ID cards to undocumented immigrants; and undermining young immigrants’ ability to go to college by eliminating in-state tuition rates for them.
- Last week: House Republicans proposed a 137-page bill that would further decimate our asylum system, and subsequently, peoples' ability to exercise their legal right to seek safety in our country.
Why am I telling you all the horrifying plans extremist politicians have laid out so far this year? Because we MUST fight back, friend, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.
But the reality is that we can’t do it without your support. That’s why we’re asking, as we approach our end-of-April fundraising deadline, will you add a donation of $16 (for 16 weeks of chaos), or anything you can to help us defend against these attacks on immigrant communities?
Thank you for supporting and sustaining our efforts to secure justice.
