John,

Despite proposing new regulations on ‘forever chemicals’ (otherwise known as PFAS) in public drinking water systems, a new study shows that when it comes to keeping pollutants out of our water, the EPA is still coming up way short.

In their 2023 study, researchers with the Natural Resources Defense Council tested drinking water samples collected across 16 states for 70 types of PFAS (41 more than what the EPA has historically tested for).

30 of their drinking water samples were contaminated with PFAS that would’ve cleared EPA testing.

The EPA has since introduced further PFAS limits, but even then, researchers say this isn’t enough: Should these proposed regulations get passed, they found that of the 30 drinking water samples that contained these toxic, synthetic chemicals, 15 would still exceed the EPA’s proposed contamination limits.

SEEC PAC knows that such high contamination levels spell a massive public health crisis in the making — and that’s why our Members Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-06) and Rep. Chris Pappas (NH-01) have led the charge to help secure $9 billion for communities across the nation to address the PFAS contamination crisis.

These funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law were designed to incentivize the EPA to roll out new proposed restrictions on forever chemicals in drinking water — and they’ve done exactly that.

But our Members knew these dollars wouldn’t be a magical fix for the onslaught of PFAS contaminating our water. Eliminating these hazardous chemicals must be an ongoing fight — and our SEEC Members are ready to take up the mantle and keep the pressure on the EPA for more comprehensive solutions.

John, 15 of our Members’ seats have already been named prime targets for Republicans in 2024, and if we’re going to continue fighting for safer drinking water guidelines, we need to protect (and expand!) our seats in Congress. Can you rush a contribution right now to help us gear up for a tough cycle ahead?
