John,
Under threat of subpoena, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz appeared in front of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to testify about his record of illegal union busting against the workers of Starbucks Workers United.
Schultz is worth $4 billion, but he came out of retirement to take over as Starbucks CEO for a year thinking he could crush the Starbucks union. Joke’s on him though. When he came back, just a few stores had unionized. Today, nearly 300 stores in 37 states have won union elections, with nearly 100 more elections on the way. All of that only for Howie to resign days before the hearing.
It’s good that Coward Schultz testified. But what he did is no different than CEOs across the country. It’s exactly what Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy are doing to Amazon workers all over the world. They’re terrified of seeing more workers stand up and join the Amazon Labor Union.
Stand with me and LeftNet! Sign your name to ask Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders to subpoena Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy to testify about their union-busting!
Schultz only showed up when HELP Chairman Bernie Sanders threatened him with a subpoena. Billionaires like Schultz and Jeff Bezos don’t think the law applies to them. That’s why they break it over and over. Getting dragged to testify for the illegal firings, intimidation campaigns, and other union-busting activities sends a message that big corporations are not above the law―and workers aren’t afraid anymore.
We can only win this fight if we stand together in solidarity. It’s not just about Amazon or Starbucks. Workers across the country are standing up and forming unions themselves like we did. Whether it’s Trader Joe’s, Home Depot, Chipotle, Apple… this is one fight. And it’s one that we absolutely have to win.
Ask Chairman Bernie Sanders: Subpoena Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy for union-busting!
In solidarity,
Chris Smalls
President
Amazon Labor Union
