Intense fighting between armed groups in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan has resulted in high numbers of deaths and injuries and forced thousands of people to flee their homes. Since the conflict erupted in mid-April, many hospitals have been forced to close. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has donated medical supplies to a health facility in Khartoum, but heavy fighting is making additional movements in the capital almost impossible. More than 400 people have arrived at the hospital MSF supports in El Fasher, North Darfur, which is now the only operational health facility in the city. Our teams there have been working around the clock to treat the injured.
MSF-supported facilities continue to treat patients in many other parts of the country, and we are preparing to adapt our operations to meet the urgent needs. "Experienced MSF emergency teams stand ready to enter Sudan as soon as they are able to support the scale-up of our activities," said Kate Nolan, MSF deputy director of operations. "We remain committed to providing much-needed health care to people in Sudan. But to do so, we must be able to ensure safety and security for our staff and patients."
