The COVID Tracking Project Part 3

Today, series host Jessica Malaty Rivera and reporters Artis Curiskis and Kara Oehler bring our new three-part series, The COVID Tracking Project, to a close with a look at racial disparities in death and what the CDC has learned.

Rivera talks with the current CDC director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, to try to understand what went wrong in the agency’s response to the pandemic – and ask whether it’s prepared for the next one.

From Center for Investigative Reporting Studios, director Nancy Schwartzman and Motto Pictures, "Victim/Suspect” will be streaming on Netflix starting May 23.

Reveal’s General Counsel Fights for Press Freedom

Reveal’s general counsel, D. Victoria Baranetsky, was in Texas this week testifying against a bill she called “catastrophic” for media and critical speech.

The proposed legislation concerns lawsuits known as SLAPP, or strategic lawsuits against public participation. Texas currently has an anti-SLAPP law that allows courts to quickly dismiss meritless lawsuits that are designed to chill speech by draining legal resources of journalists and critics. But this bill would create a costly and duplicative process that undermines that law.

Baranetsky and Reveal’s First Amendment fellow, Dara Gray, prepared the testimony.
