Dear john,

This week, I introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at protecting our communities. Here are some details about these new bills:

On Wednesday, I joined with my colleague Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND-AL) and our Senate colleagues Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Mike Braun (R-IN), and Dick Durbin (D-IL) in introducing bipartisan legislation to overhaul federal prison oversight. The Federal Prison Oversight Act would establish new, independent oversight of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. I am proud to sponsor this bill which will enhance public safety and protect the civil rights of incarcerated individuals. For more information on this bill, you can read my press release from Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday, I was proud to introduce the School Shooting Safety and Preparedness Act, legislation that would create a definition for 'school shooting,' which does not currently exist in federal law. We must continue our work to stop these horrifying tragedies in places where our children should feel safe. To learn more about our work to develop better gun safety strategies, you can click here.

On Thursday, I delivered remarks at an event with the Caucus on the Commission for the Social Status of Black Men and Boys focused on eliminating barriers to Black men and boys pursuing careers in medicine and achieving their dreams. As a proud commissioner and founding member of the Caucus, I was proud to join Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, the National Medical Association, and the Association of American Medical Colleges to talk about these critical opportunities to increase opportunity for those who will make a tremendous difference in their communities.

This past Saturday, I was so pleased to join Senator Jon Ossoff and fellow House members for Georgia's 2023 Service Academy Day. As a reminder, my application portal for the class of 2028 is now open, and applications will be due this fall!
