Notes from Mike's Desk from the Week of April 24 – 28, 2023
Hello, friends! Thank you for subscribing to my weekly newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. I’m always grateful when you recommend this resource to others.
IN THE HOUSE
On Wednesday night, House Republicans passed the largest spending cut in U.S. history, repudiating many Democrats and media prognosticators who said we couldn't get it done. We will continue to deliver meaningful, delibrative reforms that put American families first. Now, the question is, will Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden do the same? Read my full statement on the bill's passage below, and one of the many articles explaining what an important step this was for House Republicans and our nation's fiscal stability.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
While it has received little coverage in the media, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms' (ATF) proposed rule to outlaw stabilizing braces--designed to assist disabled veterans--is a gross assault on our 2nd Amendment rights. If Congress doesn't vote down the proposed rule, tens of millions of law abiding Americans would be either forced to follow the rule and destroy their brace or become felons overnight. I am pleased to have voted in the Judiciary Committee to advance legislation which would repeal this harmful rule, and I look forward to its consideration on the House Floor.
We probed the ATF Director on this concern during a Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday. Watch my questioning here:
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Last week, our House Judiciary Committee revealed that now-Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the Biden Campaign were behind the infamous "51 Intel Officials" letter regarding the Hunter Biden laptop. Blinken misled the American public and abused his credentials to play this hoax, and we will hold him accountable.
Last weekend, a bombshell story was published in the Washington Post that detailed how Afghanistan has once again become a breeding ground for terrorists - particularly ISIS-K. As it turns out, leaving Afghanistan in the hands of a terrorist group and blindly trusting their benevolence was a poor counterterrorism strategy. Go figure.
LAGNIAPPE
On Monday, Kelly and I paid a visit to her alma mater in Webster Parish, and we truly enjoyed speaking with all the bright, future leaders at Lakeside High School. Go Warriors!
Thank you again for subscribing and reading. We’ll have more next week!
