The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate in the developed world. And this rate — driven by far higher mortality rates among Black mothers and people of color — is steadily rising.

Since coming to Congress, I’ve remained committed to improving our health care system and preventing these avoidable deaths. In 2021, I introduced the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act — robust legislation comprising 12 bills addressing the inequalities baked into our health care system and to save moms' lives.

One bill from this package, the Protecting Moms Who Served Act , was signed into law in November 2021, and the remaining 11 bills are currently stalled in Congress — but, John, we must keep pushing forward.

There are too many lives on the line for us to wait any longer to take meaningful action to reverse this rising trend of maternal mortality, save the lives of current and future moms, and close racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health outcomes.

I will never stop working to address this preventable crisis by passing the entire Momnibus package through Congress, but I can’t do this work alone.
