Governor Murphy signed a bill into law this week that will provide unemployment insurance benefits to workers engaged in labor disputes, such as strikes. This effectively closes certain loopholes that previously prevented striking workers from accessing this crucial support. The bill takes effect immediately and will apply to all benefit claims filed on or after January 1, 2022.
“Unemployment insurance benefits should be a universal right for individuals who have recently lost their jobs, are unable to find work, or are currently in the middle of a labor dispute,” said Governor Murphy. [[link removed]] ”These benefits are crucial to allow individuals going through this process the support they need to continue to take care of themselves and their families during difficult times. This Administration will continue to stand up for the rights of workers who are the backbone of our state’s economy.”
I applaud the governor for prioritizing the protection of workers and their right to fight for better working conditions while still being able to earn the income necessary to survive. This shows a deep commitment to the well-being and dignity of all workers in our state.

This week President Biden officially announced his reelection campaign for a second term serving the American people and delivering on his word to create an economy and democracy that works for everyone - not just the wealthy and well-connected.
Throughout their first term, President Biden and Vice President Harris have already shown a deep commitment to improving the lives of American families. The Biden administration has lowered healthcare costs, increased access to high-quality education, provided support for working families, created new jobs, and made significant strides in ensuring that our economy is fair and just for all. That work must continue.
Under President Biden’s leadership, we have also seen unprecedented economic growth, with record-low unemployment rates [[link removed]] and rising wages for American workers. The President has remained steadfast in addressing our gun violence epidemic, improving our nation's infrastructure, and fighting for our essential rights and freedoms against attacks from extreme Republicans.
I look forward to working with Democrats in New Jersey and across the country in supporting President Biden’s re-election campaign and continuing the work of building a stronger, more prosperous, and more just America for everyone.
— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.
