Constituents have a right to expect elected representatives to reflect their values in assuring that the United States government does not default. Congress arrived at bipartisan agreements on the debt ceiling throughout the entire Trump presidency. The same bipartisan solutions should be sought now.

As Union volunteers and Americans you have the power to:
* Write, Call, and/or Show Up at your legislator’s office. ([link removed])
* Each of you can urge your Congressman to seek a bipartisan agreement to avert default by highlighting that their responsibility for the economic welfare of their constituents is more important than their participation in extremist political theater.

Every member of the House who just signed the debt ceiling bill ([link removed]) has abdicated this fundamental responsibility to their constituents and placed the nation's economy in peril. Great harm will be done to each of us and our communities if this continues:
* Cuts to Social Security and Disability Payments
* Cuts to Military Pay, Healthcare and Veterans' benefits
* Cuts to Vulnerable Families' Food Assistance

The alternative is default ([link removed]) , which would send shockwaves throughout our democracy and the global economy, throwing Americans’ daily lives into needless financial chaos. What’s worse: this is a band aid that lasts less than 1 year, so we are in for this drama again next year.

If your representative voted against the House debt ceiling bill, reach out and ask them to contact a congressman who voted in favor to make the pitch that we can negotiate the budget without holding the economy hostage. If your congressman voted for the measure, let them know you are outraged that they are willing to put our economy and our democracy at peril for political gain. It is time for all of us to stand up and say enough with the games.
