Matthew Kacsmaryk—a Trump-appointed, right-wing judge—issued a national ban on mifepristone, a drug that for 20 years has been used for safe, effective abortion care.1 While the Supreme Court ultimately overruled this decision, Kacsmaryk's ruling has led to chaos and confusion and has continued the right-wing efforts to attack health care and autonomy and reduce access to abortion care.

This is part of Kacsmaryk's personal right-wing agenda. His ruling was an unprecedented attack on FDA authority, justified by baseless claims. He has strong ties to the conservative Federalist Society. His professional record clearly demonstrates his crusades against health care, autonomy, LGBTQ+ equality, and many more human rights and freedoms.2
Now, there's more: The Washington Post has reported that Kacsmaryk removed his name from an article he had written before he came up for his Senate confirmation, potentially trying to hide his anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ track record in order to be confirmed to the federal bench.3
This judge has shown time after time that he is set on abusing his power to serve his personal political agenda. Judges who serve on federal courts must be committed to respecting the law, the Constitution, and core American values of justice, fairness, and inclusivity.

This isn't shocking; Republicans have demonstrated, again and again, that when they have power, they'll take violent, oppressive stances. They showed us last year when the right-wing-hijacked Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and in the months that followed as Republican-led state legislatures took measures to get rid of and limit abortion care.
Kacsmaryk is basing his unprecedented decision on his own right-wing religious views, deep partisanship, and personal crusade against abortion access—even after he attempted to conceal the depths of those views during his confirmation hearings. This is not how our freedoms can be treated. Congress needs to take action immediately.
