As a keystone species, sunflower sea stars play a critical role in maintaining healthy kelp forests along the Pacific Coast. Among the largest sea stars in the world, adults can have 24 limbs and grow to be more than 3 feet across. Unfortunately, due to climate change-fueled disease outbreaks, their population has plunged by more than 90% in just a few years.

To escape extinction, these amazing animals need your help. [link removed]

The federal government is about to decide whether to safeguard sunflower sea stars as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Besides saving the sea stars themselves, protection would help countless other marine species already suffering due to their decline.
