John, It’s been a hell of a few weeks as we’ve seen more and more information come out about Clarence Thomas’s failure to report his financial dealings with Harlan Crow, a billionaire and major GOP donor, including private plane and yacht travel and real estate transactions. During my time in Congress, I served on the House Judiciary Committee — the committee charged with overseeing the administration of justice within the federal courts — and I co-sponsored legislation that would finally enact a binding code of ethics for the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Roberts said the Supreme Court can regulate itself. But Justice Thomas's actions prove that's simply not true. Few have done more than Clarence Thomas to de-legitimize the Court. Sadly, we’ve seen public trust in the Court fall to record lows — and then keep falling. Until Congress imposes a binding code of ethics and enforceable recusal criteria on the Supreme Court, opens investigations into conflicts of interest and law-breaking by the justices, and puts impeachment on the table as an option, nothing will change. I’m proud to serve on CREW’s board of directors, and work together to make sure we can bring accountability to all government officials, including the Supreme Court. Holding a Supreme Court justice accountable is not an easy process, but it is absolutely critical that we do everything in our power to make sure we succeed — for the sake of our judicial system and our democracy. That means we need a full investigation into Clarence Thomas to see if he broke the law. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
