Former Political Prisoner Sayed Kadhem Dies at 24 Following Medical Neglect by Prison Authorities

On February 3rd, 2020 hundreds of Bahrainis took to the streets to mourn Sayed Kadhem Abbas, a 24 year old former political prisoner who tragically died from terminal cancer following egregious medical negligence during his detention in Jau Prison between 2015 and 2018. Photos circulating online in the wake of this tragic death show hundreds of people coming together on the streets of Bahrain to mourn the loss of Kadhem, raising his photograph above their heads and calling him a “martyr”.

Around the Gulf

 During Kuwait's Universal Periodic Review, states raised concerns over freedom of expression, gender equality and stateless persons

On Wednesday 29 January, Kuwait went throught its Third Univeral Periodic Review process. During the review, Kuwait received recommendations concerning freedom of expression, gender equality, domestic violence, migrant workers and the Bidoon. ADHRB actively took part of the review and Tweeted about it. Ahead of Kuwait’s UPR, ADHRB submitted a report, raising concerns over rights violations of stateless persons, the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association, women’s rights, and torture, inhumane prison conditions, and forced labor.
