America is nearing the deadline to raise the debt ceiling to fulfill our commitments and maintain our nation's full faith and credit. Raising the debt ceiling isn’t the time to negotiate spending cuts — it’s the time to pay our bills.

This week, Republicans showed they are willing to gamble with America’s economic future and voted for a bill that would drastically impact Americans. Their plan would cut education funding, hurt working families, kick many people off of Medicaid, take food assistance away from low-income families and seniors, hurt veterans with cuts to health care programs, and more.

We cannot hold the debt ceiling — or our country’s economy — hostage. Former presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush agree that our nation is responsible for meeting our obligations and that defaulting on our debt would hurt hard-working Americans.

It’s clear that right now, Republicans are prioritizing their own agenda to cut taxes for billionaires and corporations at the expense of hard-working Americans.

We can, and we must do better for America.

I am working hard to make sure we elect people who agree we need to keep our country on the right track by making ultra-wealthy corporations pay their fair share. We need to win big in Michigan next year because our state is one of the most critical battleground states in the nation.
