Public Housing Teach-In

Housing is a human right, but public housing has been systematically disinvested in for decades in cities all over the country while people continue to be displaced and experience homelessness. Join Women for Political Change (WFPC) for a teach-in to learn about the history of public housing and how we can collectively organize to stop privatization efforts in our community. This workshop will explain the history and context of income based housing and the local efforts by the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Housing Authority to privatize public housing, as well as provide space for discussion around how to support organizing efforts to stop privatization and reimagine the future of public housing.This event is free and open to the public. This venue is ADA accessible, located off of the lightrail and bus routes 2 and 7, and there is offsite parking available. For additional accessibility accommodations, email us at [email protected].

Labor for Bernie Rally
By the time you read this, Bernie likely will have come in first or second in Iowa. He looks even better in New Hampshire. We don’t want to be overconfident, but things seem to be falling into place. Just today, Thursday, January 30th, the 200,000-strong American Postal Workers Union endorsed the Sanders Campaign. Lots of roadblocks and challenges ahead, but the wind is blowing in our direction.
Since December, DSA members, union activists, and those close to the labor movement have been working diligently to build support for Bernie among union members and workers. In January, 45 union members and supporters met to expand our network and to plan for a February rally. AFSCME members at Hennepin County Medical Center are mapping their workplace to build support for Bernie. More than 20 IBEW members have committed to attending the rally. Letter-carriers are recruiting coworkers. Minnesota educators are meeting to build support at their schools. (read more)
Yolanda Roth, Candidate for Hennepin County Commissioner, District 1
Yolanda Roth is a Twin Cities DSA member running for Hennepin County commissioner for District 1. A community organizer and activist who advocates for housing rights, criminal justice reform, LGBTQ rights, and other causes, she has been with the labor movement for twenty years. She joined the Communication Workers of America as a telecom employee in 2000, where she took part in her first strike. Since then she’s helped lead a variety of labor campaigns, direct actions, and local movements.
While growing up in Milwaukee, a county initiative provided daycare, allowing her mother to go back to school. “I got to see her phoenix,” Roth said, describing the moment as an inspiration, showing her the power of county government to change people’s lives. (read more)

Against War With Iran, Against WWIII
War Resisters League's comms team is headed up by a Syrian-American DSA member. This statement is the most nuanced antiwar statement to come from any left group since the onset of this crisis. Note the non-inflammatory use of the WWIII metaphor. As in: WWIII has already been happening to Syrians for years. It's not some specter of future destruction now that Western white people all of the sudden feel scared. --ES

A great piece in Jacobin about Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky, an Austrian communist architect who later became a resistance fighter. She died in 2000 at the age of 102! And she did a lot more than just design the first fitted kitchen. --DKR

Dave Gardner is founder of anti-capitalist organization Growthbusters, and this is episode 39 of his podcast series. It's recommended that you listen to episode 35, "Decoupling Nonsense" https://www.growthbusters.org/decoupling-nonsense/ before this one, because it is partly a response to listener feedback from episode 35. Episode 39 also contains an interview with Terry Spahr, executive producer of the film 8 Billion Angels, with his response episode 35 and why he is not impressed with a number of things people do that they think are shrinking their carbon footprint. --DKR This is more than a review of Kellie Carter Jackson's book Force and Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence. It's also an in-depth discussion of the subject of armed slave rebellions, black American intellectuals and abolitionists on their theories of liberation and how armed resistance was a part of that, from 1865 right up to the 21st century, countering the narrative that all civil rights struggle is non-violent. --DKR
