Dear John,
In the animal welfare movement, few organizations are structured and organized to drive reforms to shield animals from cruelty under the law.
Animal Wellness Action is not only one of them, but it is the nation’s premier political advocacy group.
We work to 1) heighten the profile of animal protection in American politics, 2) drive the passage of laws and regulations to benefit animals, and 3) promote enforcement of those legal standards.
Today, I link to the
2022 Animal Wellness Action Annual Report, which highlights a series of major wins we helped to secure for animals last year, after making a thousand maneuvers on each bill in 2021 and 2022.
- FDA Modernization Act and the Reducing Animal Testing Act — to eliminate a federal mandates for animal testing for new drugs and for biosimilars.
- Big Cat Public Safety Act — to shut the door on the trade in big cats as pets and to halt commercial petting opportunities.
- Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act — to halt the trade in fins for soup.
- A fix of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act — to revive anti-doping rules in Thoroughbred racing.
That’s a burst of hugely significant lawmaking for animals, tackling several of the biggest problems that exist for animals.
But I’ll tell you that we didn’t waste a day before we developed an extraordinarily ambitious agenda for political reforms for animals for 2023, too:
- Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking Act — to crack down on dogfighting and cockfighting in dramatic ways.
- Saving Our Forgotten American Equines Act — to ban, once and for all, the live exports of American horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter for human consumption.
- Greyhound Protection Act — to ban gambling and simulcasting on greyhound races and to close out an industry that has harmed so many dogs.
- Preventing All Soring Tactics Act compromise — to make it a federal felony to engage in “horse soring” (the injuring of the feet and lower legs of Tennessee Walking Horses to cause them to exaggerate their gait for horse show performances).
- SMARTER Act — to create a new national center at the National Institutes of Health to develop alternatives to animal testing.
- ADD SOY Act — to eliminate the “milk mandate” in the National School Lunch Program, provide choice for kids, and scale down factory farming of dairy cows.
And there are many other bills, regulatory actions, and corporate efforts we are undertaking on top of those efforts.
In short, when you support our work, you enable us to take on the biggest problems for animals.
I hope you’ll look back at what we did in 2022 as a measure of our performance and ability and also look ahead with us to see our unrelenting yet strategic approach to continuing reforms for animals.
Most of all, we hope you’ll invest in our vision for a safer, more humane world for all animals.
Please donate what you can to enable this game-changing work. There’s no work that’s more important for animals.
For the animals,
