Republicans in state legislatures nationwide are setting dangerous precedents that if left unchecked, will have disastrous implications for all of us. 

In an unprecedented move, the Montana Republican-led State Legislature has voted to BAN Rep. Zooey Zephyr for the remainder of the legislative session after she spoke out against a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors across the state.

This is undemocratic, it’s wrong, and it has brought shame to our state. Targeting and silencing the first openly transgender woman legislator in Montana is beneath the office our legislators hold. Rep. Zephyr represents 11,000 Montanans, and she deserves to speak on critical legislation that impacts her constituents – just like every other elected official in our state.

This is not the first time Republican State Legislators have used their majorities to silence dissent in America. We saw it in Tennessee, we saw it yesterday here in Montana, and it won’t stop here.

GOP State Legislators are silencing dissent across America because they are proposing unpopular bills that attack the LGBTQ+ community, attack a woman’s fundamental right to make her own health care decisions, and attack democracy.

They can’t win with their ideas, so they’re resorting to censorship. And that’s why we need to hold the GOP accountable by defeating them in 2024 in state legislatures across the country. In Montana, Democrats need to win just TWO more legislative seats in 2024 so Republicans won’t have the numbers to pull a stunt like this again.
