While voter turnout tends to be its lowest in an off-cycle primary, there is one Democratic primary happening that could determine abortion access in the state of Virginia. Our endorsed candidate Lashrecse Aird is running against an anti-choice INCUMBENT Democrat in a state where reproductive freedom is constantly under attack.

Her opponent is Virginia State Senator Joe Morrissey – a former Republican who has a history of abuse and has been an outspoken anti-choice Democrat for the entirety of his career in political office. In August of 2013, Police found Morrissey, who was 56 years old, in his Henrico County home with a 17-year-old girl who had been working as an employee at his law office. According to an article in the DailyPress from the time of his charges, “Morrissey is spending nights in jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, but is allowed out each day on work release, earning a day of ‘good time’ credit reducing his six-month sentence for each day he serves in the legislature.

…He accepted the misdemeanor conviction to avoid trial on charges of taking ‘indecent liberties’ with a 17-year-old, child pornography, and soliciting a minor — felonies that could have put him in prison for decades and caused an automatic loss of his legislative position.”

As a young Black woman, mother, and higher-ed professional, Lashrecse has experienced the same struggles as so many of the voters in her district. In the House of Delegates, she fought for public school funding, better opportunities for her community, and abortion protections. She also helped Virginia make history when they passed Breonna’s Law, prohibiting no-knock search warrants.

Morrissey has no place in the Democratic Party and is unfit to serve in public office. Especially when an immensely qualified woman is running against him in the primary.
