On Wednesday, the Montana State House Republican Majority voted to censure RFS alum Representative Zooey Zephyr, the state’s first openly trans person elected to the state house. She will not be allowed on the floor for the remainder of the session, silencing not just her but the people of Missoula.
We unequivocally and unapologetically stand with Zooey and trans people everywhere whose fundamental right to live openly and freely is under direct attack by GOP legislators.
John, Republicans across state lines are sharing their reprehensible tactics to silence dissent, undermine our democracy, and entrench their interests. This is why we work in all 50 states, not just the battlegrounds. Our strategy to elect outspoken, diverse young progressives everywhere is

Censuring the first trans representative in the entire state for defending the very communities she was elected to represent is an attack on every person in the state of Montana and the country.
It is also part of a chilling trend by extremists on the right to silence elected leaders for having the audacity to speak out and stand up for civil rights, coming right off the tails of the expulsion of two Black lawmakers, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson in Tennessee and the formal censuring of a Black, non-binary legislator, Rep. Mauree Turner in Oklahoma.
Enough is enough.
