Friend -
Today we wanted to break down some numbers on what this Senate race in Michigan means for the Senate map and our razor-thin majority.
Next year, 33 of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for election and 25 of them are held by Democrats or Independents who caucus with Democrats. Of those 25 only 2 are open seats where the incumbent is retiring and 1 of those 2 seats are us.
So, next year, we are going to be running in the most competitive open Senate race this cycle in a notorious swing state that could determine control of the Senate. But that’s not all. The number of Democratic women in the Senate has not increased in three election cycles. In fact, the all-time high of 17 Democratic women that we had in 2016 has dropped to 15. And with Senator Stabenow’s retirement, that number could drop even lower. If Elissa is elected to Senator Stabenow’s seat, she will keep that number from dropping AND she will be the youngest Democratic woman in the Senate!
In 2020, during the Presidential elections, outside groups spent almost $80 million in Michigan on television ads alone. And in 2018, outside groups spent more than $40 million, more than six times the total of outside spending in the previous Michigan Senate race.
So you can bet that this time around during both a Presidential and Senate election cycle that outside groups are going to pour even more millions into Michigan and into our race to try and take back this seat and the Senate majority.
That’s why we’re reaching out today. We need to be prepared for the flood of outside spending heading toward Michigan. Every dollar we can raise now will help us prepare to fight back against the attack ads and reach voters earlier and more often. So what do you say?
Will you chip in today to help us prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in one of the most competitive Senate races in the country?
