The Equal Rights Amendment – a Two Century Fraud on American Women

Eagle Forum Applauds Death of Rejected Amendment
|

The United States Senate today attempted to perform surgery on a dead patient in an attempt to bring a decayed corpse back to life. It failed, and this is good news! On behalf of the millions of women who have fought to protect their rights as women over the last fifty years, Eagle Forum applauds the Senators who stood up for the Constitution and American women by rejecting S. J. Res. 4, a farcical resolution that purported to ratify the long-dead Equal Rights Amendment.
Make no mistake, this resolution was an attempt to shoe-horn so-called abortion and ‘trans’ rights into the Constitution despite their contentious nature. American women are tired of being disrespected by our elected representatives. Just last week, every Democrat in the House of Representatives demonstrated their disdain for females by voting against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that protects the original meaning of Title IX as a guarantee of equal protection for female athletes. Today, of 52 Senators, including all the Democrats, again insulted women by voting in favor of an unconstitutional revival of a defeated amendment.
Simply put, the ERA is dead, and rightly so. It’s clear the ERA is bad for women. It erases women at the expense of creating “equality”. Most of the people pushing for the ERA today are unable to define the word ‘woman’. They claim a woman is anyone who ‘identifies as a woman’, leaving us once again without the hard-fought rights we now enjoy. The rights of American women are protected by the 14th Amendment’s equal protection guarantee, Title IX, the Equal Opportunity Act of 1963, the Equal Employment Opportunity Discrimination Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, and the Equal Pay Act. But if ERA were to be adopted, women would lose many of the rights guaranteed by these laws. Men identifying as women would be legally allowed to usurp women’s rights. They would gain access to women’s sports teams, nursing rooms, prisons, and women’s domestic violence shelters and put women’s privacy and safety in jeopardy. Young women would lose the ability to choose single-sex education. ERA would eliminate workplace practices that accommodate pregnant women and undo state labor laws that protect women who do heavy, manual work.
Phyllis Schlafly and the women of the late 20th Century stood up for their rights as women and rejected the Equal Rights Amendment. They did not back down to the feminists, the media, Hollywood, and almost every federal politician of the 1970s and 1980s. We continue to advocate for the rights and protections of women, men, and the unborn and thank those Senators who supported women and the U.S. Constitution with their votes today.

Eagle Forum was founded by Phyllis Schlafly, a dynamic and charismatic leader who inspired countless women and men to participate in the process of self-government and public policy-making so that America will continue to be a land of individual liberty, with respect for the nuclear family, public and private virtue, and private enterprise. For nearly fifty years, Eagle Forum’s network of state organizations has led the charge to mobilize the grassroots to defend the founding principles of the United States.
