Hawaii’s public school teachers have voted overwhelmingly to approve a new four-year contract increasing pay for the more than 13,500 educators in our state.

“We have a deep appreciation for Hawaii’s teachers, and this contract was meant to demonstrate that,” Governor Josh Green said. “By raising starting salaries, we hope more of Hawaii’s young men and women will aspire to become teachers.”
[[link removed]] In addition to attracting new teachers to the field with pay increases for entry level positions and instructors working toward state licensure, the agreement will help retain experienced educators with salary increases.

“Higher salaries and bonuses for veteran teachers will also improve teacher retention and reduce teacher shortages,” Governor Green said. “Good public education remains one of our top priorities.”

Specialized teachers — including band, chorus, and drama instructors — who work extra hours to support extracurricular programs will now receive additional pay for their important contributions to student enrichment.

“We will keep taking action to make Hawaii more affordable for essential workers like teachers, and for everyone in our state,” Governor Green said. “The Green Affordability Plan will lower taxes and provide important child care tax credits for Hawaii families, and in the coming months we will make major new investments in affordable housing and reducing homelessness.”
