It’s Arielle, Chief Operating Officer at CREW. I’m reaching out to you today because Fox News is attacking our work to push for reform on the Supreme Court. We filed a complaint pushing for an investigation into Clarence Thomas’s shady real estate deal and secret luxury vacations. That complaint clearly hit a nerve at Fox News. First, they called into question why we filed a complaint so quickly after the news of the real estate sale broke — spoiler alert: it’s because we had already been working on a complaint about his luxury trips, and this new revelation required an even more urgent response. Then, Fox quoted a conservative activist who accused CREW and ProPublica, the outlet that broke the stories, of “colluding on a political drive-by shooting against Justice Clarence Thomas." John, that’s the last thing we would call a 13 page complaint in response to staggeringly corrupt conduct by one of the justices on our country’s highest court. In a moment, I’m going to explain why our work holding Thomas accountable is so important, but if you’re already with us, please make a donation to CREW to support our work, no matter what Fox says. From now through the end of the month, your donation will be MATCHED (that’s double the support!) →
Let me set the record straight: Clarence Thomas has a significant recent history of ignoring conflict of interest rules and laws in troubling ways. From failing to recuse himself from cases involving January 6th – despite having a clear conflict of interest – to these latest revelations regarding his pattern of secretly taking trips with a GOP megadonor, his ethics violations are blatant and obvious. His actions show why there needs to be an enforceable code of conduct for Supreme Court justices. But it is so far beyond what anyone should have thought acceptable that it also requires a full investigation. That’s why CREW filed a complaint with the Department of Justice and Chief Justice John Roberts demanding they investigate Clarence Thomas. This could be a turning point for the Supreme Court. We could expose these harmful violations, see real consequences, and finally implement a code of ethics at the Supreme Court to prevent these kinds of violations and conflicts of interest from ever happening again. Or we can stand by and let these egregious actions erode our democracy. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
