"Everything I do in my activism is done with and for the collective... My struggle and my voice are part of collective processes. They exist because of and together with the traditional chiefs and other women who have stood up for our rights."
– Alessandra Korap Munduruku
This week, in recognition and honor of her extraordinary activism in defense of the Amazon and Indigenous rights, our friend and close ally Alessandra Korap Munduruku, leader of the Munduruku Indigenous peoples from the Brazilian Amazon, has been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize!
Alessandra and her community are still defending their territory, including one of the last major tributaries of the Amazon unimpacted by dams. Will you make a donation today in solidarity with their ongoing struggle to defend their territory? All gifts through April 30 are being doubled by generous donors!
100% of your donation will be matched and goes directly to our program work.
In the last decade, Alessandra has become one of the most prominent and outspoken Indigenous leaders in defense of the Amazon, Indigenous peoples, and traditional communities. The Munduruku resistance movement has been crucial in protecting their territory from mining, dams, and other destructive development. They are defending a keystone territory for the region’s biodiversity in their ancestral lands which they have occupied for hundreds of years.
Alessandra is part of an emerging movement of women Indigenous leaders defending Indigenous rights, land, water, and life. Amazon Watch is honored to work in solidarity with Alessandra and we are committed to seeing Munduruku territory permanently demarcated (legal government recognition of their lands), to providing continued security for Alessandra and other Earth Defenders at risk, and to uplifting Indigenous women’s leadership and well-being.
When you donate today, your gift will fund this historic effort – to permanently secure legal protection for Munduruku territory. Plus, your gift will be matched! Thank you for your solidarity with Alessandra and the Munduruku!
In celebration and solidarity,
Leila Salazar-López
Executive Director
P.S. Can your donation go even further for the Amazon? Many employers match employee giving. The email receipt you’ll receive for your donation is often all you need to see your gift matched again!
