New Report Makes Recommendations on Controversial Genetics Research
Working Group Members Explain Findings at Launch Event

A new consensus report makes recommendations for responsibly conducting and communicating about controversial research on the genetic contributions to human social and behavioral characteristics. The report, produced by The Hastings Center, provides direction for research and communications in this area of study, which has both significant social risks and benefits. The editors are Hastings Center senior research scholar Erik Parens and Michelle N. Meyer, an associate professor and chair of the Department of Bioethics & Decision Sciences at Geisinger. Read the report, “Wrestling with Social and Behavioral Genomics: Risks, Potential Benefits, and Ethical Responsibility.”
  • An article accompanying the consensus report describes a fledgling effort to integrate community perspectives on the ethics of this research. Read the article.
  • A webinar to launch the report featured Parens, Meyer, and working group members discussing the recommendations and answering questions. Watch the launch event.
  • Additional resources can be found on a Hastings Center web hub
  • “Could studies probing genetic links to social outcomes such as income and education and to traits such as intelligence uncover differences in people of different ancestries that could be misused by racists?” The journal Science explores that question in an article about the consensus report.  Read the Science article.
