Friend,
In Sudan, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams continue to face serious challenges in providing care to patients amidst heavy violence.
“We are still hearing gunfire from our compound as I speak,” said Cyrus Paye, an MSF Project Coordinator from the South Hospital in El Fasher—now the only health facility that is operational in the city due to the surge of violence. Since April 15, the MSF-supported hospital has treated more than 400 patients—many of them children who were hit by stray bullets. The hospital is operating above its capacity, with some patients being treated on the floor in the hospital hallways because there are no more beds.
Hospitals across the country, particularly in Khartoum, Darfur, North Kordofan, and Gedaref states, are running low on vital medical supplies. However, during a lull in the fighting, we were able to donate medical supplies to a health facility in Khartoum on April 23, and we are also coordinating with local authorities to aid other hospitals in the city.
Most of Sudan has been at a standstill due to the escalation of the fighting. MSF teams have largely been unable to deliver resources throughout the country, and our facilities in South Darfur were looted.
MSF remains committed to providing much-needed healthcare to people in Sudan, especially during these challenging moments. But to do so, we need to be able to ensure safety and security for our staff and patients. We are urgently calling on all parties involved in the conflict to respect the safety of medical staff and patients.
