Dear friends of AFSP,

In recent years, AFSP has made progress in four key areas that have been identified by experts as having the greatest potential to reduce suicide in the U.S. These four areas are:

- improving suicide prevention in healthcare systems (including primary care, pediatrics, and behavioral health)
- training emergency medical providers and staff on risk assessment, referral, and follow-up
- educating firearms owners about suicide risk and promoting safe storage of firearms
- implementing suicide prevention in correctional settings

The innovative strategies and programs above are key components of AFSP’s bold goal to reduce the suicide rate in the U.S. 20%. And while we are encouraged by the promise of this important work, it is vital that we scale these programs to an unprecedented level to reach more people and save more lives.

The latest CDC data on suicide mortality is a stark reminder of the urgent need to make more progress. Suicide mortality increased 4.79% in the U.S. in 2021, with more than 48,000 suicide deaths. We are saddened by this tragic loss of life, and see it as a “call to action” to do everything we can to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

We can’t do our work alone. We are grateful to AFSP’s volunteers, donors, and the many partner companies and organizations that have joined us in this bold initiative to reduce suicide in our country. Our state and local suicide prevention efforts are conducted through AFSP’s 74 chapters across the United States.

At AFSP, we continue to take bold strides toward preventing and reducing suicide, particularly in the four areas described above. Through key partnerships and strategic action, we have begun scaling these intervention approaches and measuring their impact.

The work of AFSP and our focus on these four areas is vital, but to maintain the life-saving momentum of this work at this crucial time, we need your help.

We invite you to make a gift today in support of our initiatives in healthcare systems, emergency medicine, and correctional settings, and to keep people at risk for suicide from accessing a firearm.

Our goal is to reduce the suicide rate by 20%, and we will not stop until that goal is achieved.

Join us in making a difference by building suicide safe communities and saving lives.

Thank you,

Bob Gebbia
