Dear John,

In a few short weeks, we’ll be celebrating 50 years of progress and power at our annual Women of Vision Awards. This month, we were thrilled to announce the group of game-changing leaders who we’ll be honoring at the event, as well as the powerful artists and performers who will keep us entertained all evening.

It’s sometimes hard to reconcile hosting a major celebration in the midst of seemingly daily setbacks in the fights for gender and racial justice. While judges are trying to ban abortion pills, and Black parents are being separated from their newborn children, and trans people are being stripped of their rights. But when you look closely, every time there is cause for worry, there is just as much cause for celebration and joy. On the ground and within our Foundation, we’re seeing victories and progress every single day. Recently, our grantee partner The Afiya Center led the charge to reunite baby Mila Johnson with her parents after CPS separated them for 23 days. The family was reunited just last week.

In the words of Founding Mother Gloria Steinem, “hope is a form of planning.” From what I can see, there is so much to be hopeful for, and we’re so glad to be able to celebrate it with you.

In solidarity,

Ruth McFarlane
Chief Advancement Officer

Statement on Federal Judge’s Decision to Suspend FDA Approval of Mifepristone

Over the past few weeks, the abortion pill mifepristone’s FDA approval has been threatened in a series of legal attacks. We released a statement on the initial effort from the federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk to suspend the drug’s FDA approval – read our full statement here

As of last week, SCOTUS maintained the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, preserving access for the immediate future. Follow our partners at URGE for the latest as this legal battle continues to evolve.

Black Maternal Health Week

We joined the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) to celebrate Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), which is a week-long campaign to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black mamas and birthing people. BMHW is held annually from April 11-17.

Learn more on the BMMA website.

Report: Criminalized Survivors: Today’s Abuse to Prison Pipeline for Girls

We're proud to have funded a recent report from the Georgetown Initiative on Gender Justice & Opportunity and Rights4Girls on the criminalization of girls who experience sexual violence.

The report is a follow-up to their 2015 publication, The Sexual Abuse to Prison Pipeline: The Girls' Story, which raised awareness of how girls who have experienced sexual violence are sent into the juvenile justice system, despite being child survivors.

We’re Hiring!

We're seeking a dynamic and mission-driven Designer & Brand Coordinator to join our Communications team! This newly created role works across all of the Foundation’s channels and digital presence (including social media, email, and website) as well as fundraising events, campaigns, and more.

Applications are due May 15th. Learn more and apply here!
