Dear John,
On March 29, Russian authorities arrested Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and charged him with espionage. Gershkovich, who covered Russian politics, the economy, and the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine, is the first American journalist detained in Russia on espionage charges since the Cold War. He faces as long as 20 years’ imprisonment for his reporting.
Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, Freedom House spoke to the Wall Street Journal’s Washington bureau chief, Paul Beckett, about Gershkovich’s arrest and the increasingly dangerous environment for working journalists.

Election Watch: Cambodia
In July, voters in Cambodia will head to the polls for the country’s general election, which is held every five years.
Cambodia is a de facto one-party state, and the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has ruled the country since 1979.
Though candidates from several opposition parties are contesting the election, there are concerns that false and misleading information may permeate the online environment ahead of this year’s election.
