Friends, there has been a ton in the news lately about the fight to protect reproductive rights - and the fight to roll them back. Let’s take a minute to talk about where things stand as of now, and what we can do from here.
First, a quick rewind: More than 20 years ago, after a review of all the scientific evidence, the Food and Drug Administration approved a drug called mifepristone for medical termination of pregnancy. They determined that this drug was safe and effective.
Then, just a few weeks ago, a federal judge in Texas issued a ruling that would have halted that two-decade-old approval.
The Biden Administration immediately appealed the ruling, and the Supreme Court has granted a stay - meaning that while the appeal is litigated, access to mifepristone will not be restricted.
Right now, this critical drug remains safe, effective, and on the market. That’s good news!
Here’s the problem: Extremist Republicans have set their sights on a national abortion ban, and we know that they won’t stop until they achieve that dystopian dream.
And it’s not just dystopian for me, a pro-choice Democratic woman! The data on this issue is clear: A strong majority of Americans (61%!) believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Even among those who think it should be illegal in most cases, 4 in 10 say mifepristone should remain legal.
Let me make a few things clear:
This fight doesn’t just stop at abortion - we know that things like IVF and contraceptives are next.
Because abortion bans aren’t about saving lives - they’re about control.
And finally, if I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times - abortion is a kitchen table issue. PERIOD!
I will keep fighting for legal, safe, and accessible abortion care, but I need you by my side - and the fact of the matter is, we need to work together to take back the House in 2024 if we have any hope of codifying the right to abortion into federal law.
So please, right now, let me know that you’re in this fight with me by signing my petition to take back the House and protect reproductive rights in America.
Thank you.
