State Updates...

OLYMPIA, WA - On April 25th, Governor Jay Inslee signed HB 1240 into law, making Washington one of the most restrictive states when it comes to guns. This draconian ban on commonly-possessed semi-automatic firearms, both by name and by various cosmetic features, directly attacks the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Washingtonians.

Thankfully the new law, which is undeniably unconstitutional, does not outright ban suppressors. However, it does ban threaded barrels and suppressors on the majority of semi-automatic rifles and pistols.

We will not stand idly by and watch Washington State perpetuate its tyrannical assault on suppressors and the Second Amendment. That is why we are working with our industry and Second Amendment partner organizations to ensure this massive overstep is properly challenged in court. We will provide updates as things progress.

DENVER, CO - On April 19th, the Colorado House Judiciary Committee heard testimony for House Bill 23-1230. Over 500 witnesses registered to testify in person and remotely, with an overwhelming majority in opposition to the bill. ASA Vice President Owen Miller was among the experts who testified in opposition to the bill, noting during his testimony that any restriction on threaded barrels is a direct infringement on law-abiding citizens' ability to use a suppressor. Nearly 600 ASA members in Colorado contacted their legislators to voice their opposition.

The hearing, which began at 9:30 AM, ran into the early morning of April 20th, when the Committee finally voted 8-5 to postpone the bill indefinitely. That means, for now, the Colorado assault weapons ban is dead!

To everyone who contacted their legislators - THANK YOU! In politics, every voice matters, and your voice was part of the coalition that helped stop House Bill 23-1230 in its tracks. For that, everyone involved should be proud!

PROVIDENCE, RI - On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, ASA Vice-President Owen Miller submitted written testimony supporting Senate Bills S0348, S0383, and S0394, which would legalize suppressor ownership and hunting in Rhode Island. All three bills are sponsored by Senator Gordon Rogers (R-21). Unfortunately, given the anti-gun super-majority in the Rhode Island legislature, it comes as no surprise that the Committee recommended holding the bills for further study. Nonetheless, ASA will continue working to educate lawmakers in the Ocean State about the positive benefits of suppressors at every opportunity, and we will keep you updated if there is any movement!
