The Sullivan will be closing soon, but without a clear end date, it's hard for those sheltering there to prepare.

Continuing the response, ACEH will be sending outreach teams to camps and meeting folks where they are at. Together with our partners, we will deliver food, aid, basic medical, and other services to connect people to housing.

The Homelessness Prevention & Response System (HPRS) Advisory Council will meet on Thursday, April 27, at 4 PM to discuss relevant Anchorage Continuum of Care initiatives and current events.

Sleep Out event spotlights plight of homeless youth

Over a hundred people gathered at Kincaid Park and slept in tents to stand in solidarity with homeless youth on Friday night.

The number of homeless youth in Anchorage last month was 384 according to the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness.

“That’s a big number for a lot of kids that don’t have a warm place to sleep,” Sleep Out attendee Sandor Brown said.

How a veteran found housing and support in his community

Countless Americans teeter on the edge of homelessness, with just one missed paycheck, a sudden illness, or a family crisis separating them from living on the streets. That is one part of Mr. WIlliams’ story. 

After serving honorably in the U.S. Navy for eight years, Mr. Williams persevered through night school to earn his GED, later embarking on various jobs throughout Washington, D.C.

However, in 2005, Mr. Williams' life took an unexpected turn and he faced the harsh reality of housing instability, living in transitional housing before landing at his current home — the John and Jill Ker Conway Residence.

Countering Criminalization: Message & Communications Training

Anti-camping laws and enforcement tactics are on the rise to make homelessness less visible. Several states are debating new legislation on these issues, while cities and towns across the nation are clearing encampments with little regard for those being displaced. Advocates have an essential role in advancing better alternatives through strategic, disciplined, and effective communications. 
 
The communications training discussed proactive messages to ending homelessness as well as effective arguments against criminalization policies.

NLIHC Releases Toolkit on Eviction Record Sealing and Expungement Protections

NLIHC released a new “Eviction Record Sealing and Expungement Toolkit.” The result of a collaborative effort by members of NLIHC’s 2022-2023 End Rental Arrears to Stop Evictions (ERASE) Project Cohort, the new resource provides information about eviction record sealing and expungement protections nationwide, surveying record sealing and expungement legislation that is currently in place, identifying the core components of existing protections, and making recommendations for lawmakers developing new eviction record sealing and expungement protections in their jurisdictions.

USICH Director Delivers Remarks on the Past, Present, and Future of Housing First

USICH Executive Director Jeff Olivet delivered opening remarks at a Quarterly Update on Housing First hosted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Policy Development and Research (PD&R).

The virtual event was open to the public and included speakers and panelists from Houston, Texas; Gulfport, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; Seattle, Washington; and Richmond, Virginia.

All In: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, which USICH released late last year, recommits the federal government to a “Housing First” approach. The plan promotes Housing First as one important strategy for urgently addressing basic needs of people in crisis, expanding housing and support, and building better systems to prevent homelessness—all with an evidence-based, all-hands-on-deck approach based on what people who have experienced homelessness say they need and want.

In his remarks, Olivet touched on the history of Housing First, the current application of it, and the ways that it must improve.
