A lot is happening right now and we're all needed Indivisibles,
We wanna catch you up on exactly what’s been happening on impeachment:
Republican senators voted for a witness-free trial.
Late Friday night, Republican senators made history by voting to block witnesses from testifying at the impeachment trial simply because they held incriminating evidence that Trump has abused his office for personal gain. This trial is a sham -- and any acquittal made after blocking key evidence is not an exoneration but a cover-up.
Trump has the votes he needs for acquittal.
The Senate impeachment trial is still going on, but with 34 senators already declaring their intent to acquit, a vote to convict Trump is all but impossible at this point. Today’s sessions focused on closing arguments for both sides, and the next two days will consist of Republican senators trying to justify why they voted against witnesses, and Democrats doubling down on the democracy-crushing nature of how this trial played out.
We’re expecting to see a vote to acquit Trump on Wednesday or Thursday.
We’re in payback mode.
Right now, the best thing we can do is to vote Trump and all his GOP flunkies out of office and take back the Senate and White House from these traitors. The impeachment process is just the latest in a string of GOP injustices. Senate Republicans have been working for years to destroy democratic norms and hold up progressive change in favor of benefitting a few super-wealthy interests. It’s time to fight back -- and we are.
Ready to talk about how we’re going to win? Here’s our plan:
- Build awareness & accountability.
- Boost local political power.
- Organize to win.
- Get out the vote.
Give now to defeat these Republicans and fund our work to take back the Senate!
In fact, the ball is already moving. We’re partnering with the Nobody is Above the Law coalition to host hundreds of events around the country with one message: reject the cover-up! On Thursday, Feb 5., activists are coming together to make our voices heard (see to-dos for more info).
And now, let’s get to those to-dos:
Your 4 weekly to-dos
- Sign up to text voters for the Payback Project. The Payback Project is launching a new peer-to-peer textbanking campaign to engage voters across nine target states to take action with Indivisibles in their area and mobilize locally to flip their Senate seats. No matter if you're brand-new to this or a long-time leader, we're asking you to sign on right now to commit to do the work to win back the Senate this fall -- sign up and we'll send you everything you need to start reaching key voters!
- Vote on the Payback Project’s first newspaper ad. We’re going to place a full-page newspaper ad in one of our target states, showcasing a senator’s bad vote on impeachment and funneling people directly into our payback plans. Who do you most want to see voted out? Vote and let us know.
- Join a Reject the Cover-Up event near you. Trump's Senate trial cover-up is in progress. Republican Senators have refused to call witnesses for a fair trial-- even though a large majority of Americans want to see witnesses testify. At this moment, it is important to make our voices heard. As the final vote in the Senate trial is scheduled to happen Wednesday, Feb. 5th, on that afternoon, hundreds of thousands of Americans will mobilize with a simple demand: Reject the Cover-Up.
- Register for the National Activist Call on Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. ET. Make sure to join us for an update on impeachment and presidential engagement post Iowa.
2020 Update
Today’s the day! The Iowa Caucus has finally arrived and it’s still anybody’s race. Today’s contest kicks off a five-month marathon of a primary season, dotted with debates, forums, and town halls (oh my!). And the next contest in New Hampshire is just eight days away. Read on to get caught up with what the next 10 days hold and how you can get involved:
- The 8th Dem Debate will take place this Friday, Feb. 7, in Manchester, NH. It’s coming hot on the heels of the Iowa caucus, giving candidates a small window to capture as much post-Iowa momentum as possible before the debate and subsequent New Hampshire primary. So far Vice President Biden, Mayor Buttigieg, Senator Klobuchar, Senator Sanders, Mr. Steyer, Senator Warren, and Mr. Yang have qualified, but we could see more candidates added to the stage this week — candidates have until 11:59pm on Feb. 6 to qualify.
- The DNC announced over the weekend that it would be nixing its donor threshold criteria. Many candidates have come out against the change, seeing it as a move on the DNC’s part to accommodate Mike Bloomberg, when it made no such concessions to other candidates earlier in the process. Bloomberg hasn't qualified for prior debates because his campaign isn't accepting donations -- instead, he is personally financing the entire operation.
Support the Payback Project
On Friday, GOP senators completed the latest phase in their cover-up scheme: they blocked witnesses from appearing in the impeachment trial.
This is not the first bad vote they’ve taken, and it won’t be the last. We know, no matter what happens in the rest of this trial, they’re beyond redemption. So we’re not waiting: we’re mobilizing against them right now. We launched the Payback Project to show these senators we won’t stand for their destructive, anti-democratic antics anymore. We’re targeting nine of the worst Senate Republicans, and we’re going to kick them out of office this year.
We’ve got a massive, million-dollar plan to get even, and we need your help. Donate $10 today to support the Payback Project and all our work in 2020.
