Earlier this week, the Republican-led Montana State Legislature voted to silence Representative Zooey Zephyr after she spoke out against a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors across the state. Now, they have voted to BAN Rep. Zephyr for the remainder of the legislative session.

It’s undemocratic, and it’s wrong. Targeting and silencing the first openly transgender woman legislator in Montana is beneath the office our legislators hold. Rep. Zephyr represents 11,000 Montanans, and she deserves to be able to speak on critical legislation that impacts her constituents – just like every other elected official in our state.

This is just another example of the Republican Party using its power to silence people. And it’s shameful.

While Republicans wield their power to silence dissent rather than to do the work they were sent to Helena to do, Montana Democrats are ready to do their jobs serving the state and protecting every Montanan’s constitutional rights.

Montana House Republicans can continue to silence Rep. Zephyr and the 11,000 Montanans she represents, but they will not be able to bury this story or escape the consequences of using their power so irresponsibly and undemocratically.

We’re going to make sure that they pay for their actions by defeating them in 2024.
