Fascism is a political ideology that promotes authoritarianism, nationalism, and the suppression of dissent. It has been responsible for some of the darkest chapters in human history.
Today, we face the threat of fascism creeping into our state governments, with Republican lawmakers launching fascist attacks on our democratic institutions. These tactics include voter suppression, the weaponization of misinformation to sow discord and manipulate public opinion, and the stripping of power from Democratic representatives.
By employing such strategies Republicans are working overtime to undermine the democratic process and erode the rights and liberties of the American people.
A recent example of this growing threat was just seen in Tennessee, where Republicans expelled two Black Democratic state House members, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, for protesting gun reform following a school shooting. The incident demonstrates the lengths to which some Republicans will go to silence dissent and maintain their grip on power.
Effectively fighting back requires dedication and persistence. Stand with us as we fight back against GOP extremism and denounce fascism in our state governments.
The trend of stripping Democrats of power is growing, with Republicans in other states working to censure state representatives who challenge GOP extremism.
This tactic not only silences opposition but also creates an environment where dissent is punished, and lawmakers are discouraged from speaking out against injustices and abuses of power.
Republican House Speaker Cameron Sexton has demonized the Tennessee representatives, comparing their protest to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. This false equivalence is a prime example of the weaponization of misinformation, as it seeks to discredit and delegitimize legitimate protest.
By ostracizing and demonizing those who dare to challenge their authority, Republicans are turning states into laboratories for fascism and autocracy.
We cannot sit idly by and allow these fascist tactics to infiltrate our state governments. We must demand that our elected officials prioritize the preservation of our democratic principles by advocating for policies that ensure fair and equal access to voting and holding politicians accountable for spreading misinformation and engaging in undemocratic practices.
With our democracy under attack from within, stand with us as we denounce these attacks and fight against fascism in state governments.
By educating ourselves, voting to hold politicians accountable, and advocating for policies that protect our democratic principles, we can stand united against the rise of fascism in our state governments and ensure that our nation is a beacon of freedom and justice for all.
