LANSING - Today, the General Government Appropriations Sub-Committee in the state Senate produced a budget recommendation providing an increase of $18.13 million for the Department of the Attorney General for fiscal year 2024. That would amount to a total departmental budget of $136.4 million. The funds would enable the Department to increase prosecutorial resources, increase allocation to conviction integrity unit services, and increase departmental capacity for consumer protection enforcement. In response, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel remarked:  

“We appreciate the budget recommendation as it demonstrates significant investments to aid the Department of Attorney General in our continued efforts on behalf of Michigan residents. The proposal from Senate sub-committee and Chair Cherry would allow my office to expand our work in prosecuting sexual assault cases and cold case homicides, as well as build out our consumer protection efforts to address the litany of scams Michigan residents face every day from criminal entities.” 

“During my first term, it was difficult to obtain any funding increase for my department, regardless of the data pointing to the benefit increased investment would provide the people and State of Michigan. The proposals from both the House and Senate certainly recognize the good work the Department of Attorney General does day in and day out and I look forward to continuing to work with both sub-committee chairs to ensure that their proposals provide the department with the resources it needs to continue to do its work.”
