Here's what MoveOn members are looking for as we watch the results of tonight's Iowa caucuses
Dear MoveOn member,
By tonight, we'll know which candidates thousands of MoveOn members and many other Iowa Democrats supported in the first vote of the 2020 presidential primary. And we'll be one step closer to defeating Trump and electing a president who will aggressively pursue a progressive, inclusive vision for America.
It is imperative we all give everything we can to defeat Trump and his GOP accomplices this November and elect progressives up and down the ballot. As we head into Iowa, the Republicans are working to cover up Trump's crimes, and the administration is expanding its xenophobic Muslim Ban, rolling back clean water protections, and more.
We don't know who will be at the top of the ticket, but we do know it will take a movement to propel us to a win in November. That movement is us—and tens, or hundreds, of millions of our friends, neighbors, family members, coworkers, first-time voters, dedicated community members (including those who may not be able to cast a vote themselves), and so many more who are fighting for economic, racial, and social justice; for peace and diplomacy; for civil rights and civil liberties; and for a country where everyone can thrive.
Will MoveOn be endorsing a candidate in the presidential primary? MoveOn follows its members, and we endorse only if a majority of member support coalesces around a single candidate. In this crowded field, our member support is divided among multiple competitive candidates, several of whom are running unapologetically progressive campaigns. Even in elections when MoveOn members have not endorsed in the primary, we've played a big role mobilizing voters in the general election—which has also been true when the candidate we endorsed in the primary didn't make it to the general.
MoveOn members have, though, been clear about the values and qualities we want in a Democratic candidate. Across our straw polls, MoveOn members repeatedly said that we want candidates who will push a bold vision, who put forward an agenda that recognizes we must tackle economic justice and racial justice together, and who are responsive to the powerful, progressive grassroots movements taking hold across the country.
We've seen big, powerful ideas hold sway in this primary so far: the vision of health care as a human right, ambitious approaches to climate change like the Green New Deal, transformative ideas to tax the wealthy their fair share, ideas to make college free, to dismantle corporate and right-wing centers of power, to tackle our prison industry, to reimagine immigration policy that is centered on the human dignity of all of us, and so much more.
And while we've seen some powerful leaders already leave the race, the current field remains one of the most proudly progressive we've ever seen on a Democratic primary ballot.
That's a testament to the work of grassroots movements that have helped transform the bounds of what's considered possible in this country—and of the work of millions of MoveOn members, year in and year out, to elevate critical issues and always keep pressure on the powerful, both within our party and on the other side of the aisle.
After we watch tonight's results, MoveOn members together will join and shape the political conversation that continues through New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Super Tuesday, and beyond. Together, MoveOn members will work and vote for candidates who champion our progressive vision—and through the summer and fall, we'll come together to fight with all our might to defeat Trump and his Republican accomplices and elect new leaders for our country.
Have a candidate you know you're backing? Not sure yet? Now is a great time to get in the game and start talking to other voters. Every conversation that takes place during the primary gets all of us a step closer to defeating Trump. A variety of candidates and progressive organizations have volunteer shifts in nearly every part of the country—many of which are posted at Mobilize.us, a website that serves as a clearinghouse for campaign opportunities.
Search now for what's coming up near you, and get involved. There's no time like the present!
Thanks for all you do.
—Rahna, Allison, Dan, Chris T., and the rest of the team
P.S. Curious about the MoveOn endorsement process? MoveOn members have not endorsed in every presidential race. In 2004, MoveOn members did not endorse in the primary. We did endorse Barack Obama in 2008, and in 2016 we ran a campaign to encourage Elizabeth Warren to run, then endorsed Bernie Sanders shortly before the Iowa caucuses, and then went on to give our all to support Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the general. Below are the steps we're taking this year:
- We are working to influence the race to ensure a bold progressive emerges victorious. We work to bring out the best in candidates and showcase the big, bold ideas that win elections. MoveOn's Big Ideas Forum early on in the race made headlines; helped anchor the primary in big, progressive ideas; and built the relationship between leading candidates and the MoveOn community—you!
- We sent endorsement applications to all Democratic presidential primary candidates in December, and we're happy to say that each candidate has returned their application!
- We regularly survey MoveOn's membership to keep a pulse on which candidates you're supporting and if you think MoveOn members should make an endorsement. We've released national straw polls twice this cycle so far.
- MoveOn makes an endorsement (in a presidential or any other race) only if a majority of members coalesce behind a single candidate.
Want to support MoveOn's work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump's agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation's pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your ongoing support, now more than ever. Will you stand with us?
